Klopp urges Anfield to fire Champions League return

Jurgen Klopp wants Anfield to help seal Liverpool’s Champions League return.

One goal currently separates the Reds and Hoffenheim heading into Wednesday’s final play-off encounter for Europe’s elite club competition.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side are attempting to unseat a 2-1 deficit and their country’s poor record at Anfield, with no German team emerging victorious in over four decades.

Klopp believes that Liverpool’s iconic home will hold the key to seeing their name in Thursday’s draw for the Champions League group stages.

He said: “Anfield is a main factor, we all know it.

“It’s a very special place [but] nothing happens by itself. We have to perform and deliver.

“We all know the atmosphere can and will help you. I really hope everyone is ready to fight.

“I’d be concerned if the people thought a weak side was coming from Hoffenheim and we need to be dominant and that each bad pass gets a moan.

“I know we have a football crowd who know about the quality and are ready to fight.

“We are ready to fight too.”

Klopp has also insisted that he has no issues with Philippe Coutinho despite the playmaker’s attempts to seal a move to Barcelona earlier this month.

Coutinho emailed a transfer request to sporting director Michael Edwards as the Spanish giants failed with three consecutive transfer bids.

But the Brazil international now appears to have made peace with Liverpool’s refusal to sell him and is understood to have requested clear-the-air talks.

Liverpool will be without Coutinho for the remainder of this month as Klopp confirmed he is currently sidelined by illness following a recent back injury.

“Phil can’t start tomorrow because on top [of the injury] he’s now ill,” he added.

“If he started training again tomorrow it would take time because he hasn’t trained for a long time.

“I have no idea in this moment [on his return]. It depends when he’s back.”
