Everton blast PSR fine ruling as ‘dangerous’

Everton have blasted the ruling over their Premier League financial breaches.

An independent disciplinary panel ruled that David Moyes’ side must pay compensation to Burnley following their Profit and Sustainability overspend.

The period which covered the 2021/22 season saw the Blues hit with a 10-point deduction in November 2023 after falling afoul of top flight regulations.

Premier League rivals were invited to pursue compensation by the league in the wake of that historic sanction, which was reduced to six points on appeal.

The newly relegated Clarets, who also went down in 2022, stand to gain £35 million in recompense from the ruling which Everton are already appealing.

However Hill Dickinson Stadium chiefs hit back emphatically over the case, describing it as ‘fundamendally flawed in both law and fact’.

“This ruling sets a dangerous and unworkable precedent for English football, given it is constructed on a principle that a club can be in breach of financial rules at any point in a financial year,” read a club statement.

“Everton believes the panel’s ruling misrepresents the clear evidence presented by its legal representatives and that an appeal will be successful.

“The club is confident of its ongoing PSR compliance and has also obtained confirmation from the Premier League of its clear position that this ruling should not be the cause of any future PSR sanction.

“Evertonians can be assured that ownership are focused, with strengthened resolve, on delivering their vision of returning Everton to the top echelon of English football.”
