Two men have been charged over a far-right protest in Liverpool city centre.
Between 100 and 150 people gathered outside St George’s Hall at around 7pm on Tuesday (June 9) before marching through the city centre.
Doors and windows at the Richmond Hotel in Hatton Garden were damaged while protesters were reported to have shouted racist abuse at people.
A man was also seen taking a Deliveroo bag from a rider’s bicycle whilst making racist comments towards him and spitting.
Further racially abusive comments were aired by another man using a megaphone when the protest moved into the Bold Street area.
Police have now confirmed that two people have been charged in connection with the incidents, which come ahead of another planned demo on Saturday.
Robert Scott has been charged with burglary of a dwelling with intent to cause criminal damage and theft (of a Deliveroo bag).
The 46-year-old from Bootle was remanded into police custody ahead of a scheduled appearance at Wirral Magistrates Court on Friday (June 12).
Jake O’Toole-Cluskey, 19, from Liverpool was also charged with a racially aggravated public order offence. He has since been bailed with conditions.
Liverpool BCU Commander Natalie Perischine said: “Our officers respect the right of individuals to peacefully gather and express their views in accordance with the law, however, we will never tolerate any type of racism, violence or criminality on our streets.
“Officers will continue to be in local areas across Merseyside and the city centre over the weekend and are engaged with communities to maintain public order, prevent crime and protect the wider community.”
