Liverpool MP calls for Keir Starmer to resign

A Liverpool MP has called for Sir Keir Starmer to resign as Prime Minister.

Kim Johnson joined a growing list of Labour backbenchers who are seeking a change of leadership with Starmer facing mounting pressure within his own party.

Last week’s local elections saw the government suffer hefty losses with Reform UK making considerable gains on councils across the country including on Merseyside.

Starmer told a cabinet meeting on Tuesday (May 12) that he will continue to fight on with the 78 MPs demanding his resignation falling short of a leadership process.

But Liverpool Riverside representative Johnson believes a change is required to restore the country’s faith in Labour on the run-up to the 2029 General Election.

“I believe that it’s not just about changing our leader to put us back on track,” she told LBC.

“We need a culture change. We need the right people with the right policies going forward.

“We need to be big and bold – we’ve got three years to turn this around now and we have to do that.”

She added: “No one’s thrown their hat in the ring at the moment.

“There are some people that have been suggested. We know that Andy Burnham, the ‘King of the North’, has been suggested. He doesn’t have a position [in Parliament] at the moment.

“Because of the results last week, where is the safe seat for Andy? At this moment in time, that could be very, very challenging. It’s about who throws their name in the hat.

“But it has to be the right person that resonates with our communities because at this moment in time, I have to say that Starmer is a dead man walking.”
