I Am Maximus has made history in winning the 2026 Grand National.

The 9/2 favourite, who finished behind Nick Rockett in last year’s race, took the crown at Aintree by two-and-a-half-lengths on Saturday (April 11).

Ridden by jockey Paul Townend, 2024 winner I am Maximum is the first horse since Red Rum in 1977 to claim two Nationals in non-consecutive years.

Trainer Willie Mullins also sealed three successive victories in the world’s most famous steeplechase, a feat last achieved by Vincent O’Brien in 1955.

Owner JP McManus capped off a memorable afternoon for his syndicate with three of the first four horses home including runner-up Iroko and Johnnywho.

“He’s tough,” Townend told ITV Sport.

“He’s a really, really good horse, and although Grangeclare West and Nick Rockett looked good in training, this lad wasn’t telling me not to ride him.

“He is so good and has such an engine. He will gallop to the end of the world for you. I am really privileged. What a horse.

“Grand Nationals and Gold Cups are the pinnacle of the sport and I have them both.”

From the 34 runners, 16 horses completed the course with no fatalities.
