An NHS worker had his skull fractured in an attack at a Liverpool amateur football game.
Richard Agbasoga was playing for amateur team Ormskirk West End against Calci FC when the incident occurred at Wavertree Sports Park on Saturday (October 25).
He received punches and kicks to the head after around a dozen men entered the pitch following a fracas caused by one of the visiting players receiving a headbutt.
The Liverpool Premier League halted the game which Ormskirk were leading 2-0 at the time and have suspended Calci FC’s remaining fixtures pending investigation.
Mr Agbasoga, a temporary healthcare worker from Ghana, was taken to hospital after the incident and is expected to be unable to work for the next three months.
However due to the 27-year-old’s status as an overseas student, he is not eligible to claim statutory sick pay during his considerable period of recovery.
Ormskirk West End have launched a fundraising page to help Mr Agbasoga which has generated more than £2,000 in donations.
The team’s manager Chris Bull claimed that his player had suffered permanent damage to an ear in the attack and was being assessed for possible sight damage.
