Liverpool MP Luciana Berger joins Labour revolt against Jeremy Corbyn

Luciana Berger has become the third Merseyside politician to quit her role in Labour’s Shadow cabinet.

The Wavertree MP resigned as Shadow minister for Mental Health just hours after Garston and Halewood representative Maria Eagle and Wallasey politician Angela Eagle both relinquished their own positions in protest at leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Ms Berger became a Labour MP in 2010 and is now planning to run for Liverpool’s Metro Mayor but has tendered her resignation from the Shadow cabinet as Corbyn faces renewed calls to stand down in the wake of last week’s EU referendum.

In a letter to Mr Corbyn, she wrote: “I have listened hard to the arguments on both sides and thought deeply.

“My conviction is that we need a Labour leader who can unite the party, both in Parliament and in the country.

“I have always served Labour party and our leader with loyalty. Having listened closely to local party members, loyalty to the party must come first.”
