Arrest made following Concert Square stabbing

A man has been arrested after a stabbing in a Liverpool city centre nightspot.

Emergency services were called to Concert Square at around 12am on Thursday following reports that a man had been assaulted in the area.

The incident took place on Wood Street, at the side of McCooley’s bar and saw the victim taken to hospital suffering from two stab wounds to his leg.

His injuries are serious but not believed to be life-threatening.

Police confirmed that a 24-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested at the scene on suspicion of a Section 18 assault following CCTV checks.

During the arrest, the man became aggressive towards officers and was further arrested on suspicion of Section 47 assault of an emergency worker.

One officer suffered a bite wound to the finger and another to the shoulder following the assault by the man, who was later released under investigation.

Detective Inspector Ben Dyer said: “This would have been an awful attack for anyone to witness and, while we have made one arrest, enquiries remain ongoing.

“If you were in Concert Square or the surrounding area during the early hours of Thursday morning and saw anything or anyone suspicious then please get in touch. Information you hold could be vital to our enquiries.

“After a long and difficult lockdown we want our city centre to be a safe place for all in Merseyside to enjoy and we simply will not tolerate assaults such as this.

“Following several unacceptable, criminal acts of violence in the city centre over the past week we have stepped up high-visibility patrols and we will be using knife arches at busy locations to help keep people safe.

“We will continue to work tirelessly with the public and our partners to prevent violence and remove the scourge of knife crime from our streets.

“Unfortunately, during the incident on Thursday, two Merseyside Police officers were also assaulted.

“Our officers put their own lives and personal safety on the line every day in order to keep us all safe and they should never have to tolerate or accept physical violence when carrying out their duties.

“I’m sure the vast majority of law-abiding members of the public would agree that assaults on police officers or other emergency workers are totally unacceptable and the arrest shows that this will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
