Liverpool joined a host of UK cities protesting against a planned no-deal Brexit.
Demonstrations took place across the country on Saturday over Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament for five weeks beginning on September 10.
The prorogation of the House of Commons is expected to lead the UK’s scheduled withdrawal from the European Union without an agreement.
Thousands of people gathered at the Wellington Monument near to St George’s Hall from midday with many waving EU flags and chanting ‘stop the coup’.
Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson was joined by other local representatives to voice their opposition to the Government’s current strategy under Johnson.
Among those publicly addressing the crowd was Mayor Anderson’s former deputy Ann O’Byrne, who launched a tirade against the Tory prime minister.
Peter Dowd, the Labour MP for Bootle, delivered a message from the party’s leader Jeremy Corbyn and called for Johnson to ‘abdicate’ over the move.
He said: “If Boris Johnson thinks he is king we need to make him abdicate. He does not respect Parliament and rarely turns up there.”
Also speaking was Green Party councillor Tom Crone, who labelled the prorogation of Parliament as ‘a constitutional outrage’.
“Boris’s decision to close down parliament so he can force through a no deal Brexit has rightly been described as a constitutional outrage,” said Mr Crone.
“The idea of a Prime Minister, elected by less than 1% of the population, with a majority of one closing down parliament so he can to avoid scrutiny is one of the most extreme twists yet of our long Brexit nightmare.”
