Ex-Liverpool striker jailed for 10 weeks

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has been jailed for 10 weeks.

Saunders pleaded guilty to refusing to provide a breath test when stopped by police on suspicion of drink driving in Boughton on May 10 this year.

The 55-year-old had initially denied both charges at an earlier hearing but changed his plea during Wednesday’s scheduled hearing.

Saunders, who scored 25 goals during a 13-month spell at Anfield in the early 1990s, will be banned from driving for 30 months following his release from prison.

Representatives of the ex-Wales international had attempted to argue that he refused to provide a breath sample due to suffering from asthma.

But prosecutor Kerry Pepperall disputed the claim as it was not mentioned at the time of the football turned media pundit’s arrest.

She also described CCTV footage of the arrest showing ‘an intoxicated person’ who was ‘highly under the influence of alcohol’.

District Judge Nicholas Sanders described Saunders, of Northwich in Cheshire, as ‘arrogant’ in sentencing and said that he believed he was ‘above the law’.

Anyone failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis when asked by a police officer carries a maximum penalty of six months behind bars.
