James Bulger film misses out on Oscars award

A controversial film about the killing of James Bulger has failed to win an Oscar.

‘Detainment’ depicted the toddler’s 1993 murder through the transcripts of his assailants Robert Thompson and John Venables’ respective police interview.

The production caused outrage, with over 200,000 people signing a petition to have it removed from the short film category at Sunday’s 91st Academy Awards.

But the film, directed by Vincent Lambe, was beaten to the accolade by Skin, which centres on a gang war, at the Los Angeles event.

James’ mum Denise Fergus has spoken on Twitter of her relief at the news.

She wrote: “I’m so made up, that short film Detainment did not win the Oscar.

“Can’t tell you just how relieved I am, thanks to everyone who has agreed with me on this.”
