Labour chief calls for Wavertree CLP suspension

Labour’s deputy leader has called for its Wavertree branch to be suspended.

Tom Watson made the request in a letter to the party’s general secretary Jennie Formby due to the constituency’s no-confidence vote against Luciana Berger.

Motions were set to be tabled against the politician, who has been Wavertree’s elected MP since 2010, on grounds of her ‘continually criticising’ Jeremy Corbyn.

One of the tabled votes had accused Berger of ‘continually using the media to criticise’ the current Labour leader.

Berger, who is Jewish, has routinely spoken out against the Labour leader’s stance on accusations of anti-Semitism within the party.

Although the no-confidence motions were withdrawn on Friday, Watson has requested that the Wavertree branch be suspended over its ‘bullying’ of Berger.

He wrote: “It is clear to me that Luciana Berger is being bullied. This behaviour by her local party is intolerable.

“The actions of her constituency are not only threatening towards Luciana personally but are bringing our party into disrepute.

“I am therefore requesting that you take the necessary steps to suspend Liverpool Wavertree Constituency Labour Party.”

Labour previously suspended its Wallasey chapter in 2016 amid allegations of bullying and intimidation against Angela Eagle in her bid to stand against Corbyn.
