Billy Butler set to leave Radio Merseyside

Legendary broadcaster Billy Butler is set to leave Radio Merseyside.

Butler confirmed in a post on Facebook on Saturday that his contract with the BBC station, where he currently hosts a twice weekly show, will not be renewed.

“I regret to say that Radio Merseyside have decided not to renew my contract,” he wrote.

“So my last shows will be this Thursday and Friday. Thank you. Tune in for the end of an era.”

The 76-year-old has spent the majority of his broadcasting career in local radio.

He originally joined Radio Merseyside in 1971 and made a further two returns in 1982 and 2000, with spell at local rivals Radio City sandwiched in between.

In addition to radio, Butler appeared on several TV shows including The Mersey Pirate, Thank Your Lucky Stars and the Fax and Fun Factory.

But his most popular work remains the quiz show Hold Your Plums which he co-hosted with fellow broadcaster Wally Scott and ran for 17 years.
