Lawyers on behalf of the Hillsborough match commander David Duckenfield have made an application to halt all prosecution against him.
The request came before judge Sir Peter Openshaw at Preston Crown Court this morning.
Benjamin Myers, QC, today launched the bid for a legal order called a ‘stay’, which would stop all of the proceedings against the 73-year-old.
The former South Yorkshire Police chief superintendent was charged with the manslaughter by gross negligence of 95 Liverpool fans who died in the disaster at the FA Cup semi-final on April 15 1989.
The law at the time stipulated that there can be no prosecution over the death of the 96th victim, Tony Bland, as he died more than a year and a day after his injuries were caused.
His trial was due to start on January 14, 2019.
