Plans for school run road closures in Liverpool

Some roads in Liverpool could be closed during the school run as part of new proposals.

Council bosses are set to debate the motion put forward by Labour’s Laura Robertson Collins, Ann O’Byrne and James Roberts on November 1.

Under the proposals, roads around primary schools would be closed at the start and end of the school day to help reduce air pollution and child road accidents.

Previous requests to pilot temporary school road closures by the Green Party were rejected by Liverpool City Council’s regeneration committee in 2016.

Current plans to reduce congestion in the city includes potential ‘red routes’, where it would be deemed illegal for vehicles to stop on three major roads.

Liverpool is ranked among 30 places in the UK which exceeds the World Health Organisation’s air pollution limits, which can cause severe health problems.

Over 200 deaths have been linked to the problem in the city annually.
