The iconic Littlewoods Building on edge lane is the scene of a huge fire this evening.
Firefighters are currently dealing with a large fire in the old Littlewoods Building. Crews were alerted to the fire at approximately 7:52pm.
It took crews just four minutes to arrive on the scene to tackle the blaze. On their arrival crews found that the roof of the five story building to be “very well alight”.
An area that is said to be approximately 200m x 100m is on fire. It is believed that the fire starts from the first floor of the building and continues upwards.
Members of Merseyside Fire and Rescue crew have entered the building using breathing apparatus in order to tackle the fire. There are also two main jets that are being used to tackle the fire externally.
An update shortly after 9pm this evening confirmed that the fire was still ongoing. Some nine engines are at the scene and apparatus including a combined platform ladder and high volume pumps are in use.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue service received more than 60 calls from members of the public regarding the fire.
