Police investigate Loris Karius death threats

Police are probing death threats sent to Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius.

A number of aggressive messages were sent to the footballer after his side’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid on Saturday night.

Karius’ family were also targeted in the onslaught of abuse after he was at fault for two of the Reds’ goals conceded against the European champions.

Merseyside Police confirmed that they are investigating social media posts aimed at the 24-year-old and his Anfield teammates.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm officers are aware of a number of comments / threats made towards football players via social media.

“The force takes social media posts of this nature extremely seriously and any offences identified will be investigated.

“Merseyside Police would like to remind social media users that any offences including malicious communications and threatening behaviour will be investigated.”

Karius issued a public apology to Liverpool fans on Sunday for his role in the 3-1 reversal for Jurgen Klopp’s side in Kiev’s Olimpiyskiy Stadium.
