Sean Cox’s family ‘overwhelmed’ by support

Sean Cox’s family are ‘humbled and overwhelmed’ by the support they have received from Liverpool.

The County Meath native remains in a critical condition following an attack outside Anfield stadium before last month’s Champions League semi-final.

Two Italian men have been charged with the incident outside The Albert pub, where Mr Cox was set upon by hooligans affiliated to the Reds’ opponents Roma.

Liverpool’s players held up a banner in solidarity with the 53-year-old after booking their place in the Champions League final at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma officials joined the football world in paying tribute to Mr Cox, whose family have issued a statement through the Anfield club.

They said: “There are no words to describe the gratitude we feel to the ordinary people of Liverpool and Ireland who have taken Sean to their hearts in a way that underlines why those places have such a deserved reputation for generosity and solidarity.

“Every day letters and cards arrive from this country, from Ireland and beyond.

“Every one of them wishes us well and the accompanying offers of support have reminded us, even in our darkest moments, that we are not walking alone.

“Sean remains in a critical condition but he is a fighter and that, coupled with the medical and spiritual support he is receiving, gives us hope in our hearts.”
