Liverpool fans have been hailed for their ‘exceptional’ behaviour in Rome.
Over 5,000 supporters travelled to the Italian capital for their side’s Champions League semi-final aggregate win on Wednesday night.
The match passed off largely without incident despite the country’s press alleging up to 1,000 ‘ultras’ were set to descend on the city from England.
Chief Superintendent Dave Charnock said: “I would like to commend the Liverpool fans for their exceptional behaviour during last night’s match in Rome.
“It was all very good natured and there were no major issues reported.
“One Liverpool fan was arrested by Italian police at the turnstiles on suspicion of common assault and a public order offence but we have not been made aware of any other arrests.
“I am aware there was long queues to get into the ground due to the tight security procedures but fans remained in good spirits throughout and we were able to get them away from the ground safely following the match.
“I would also like to thank the stewards and staff from Liverpool Football Club for their support and assistance.”
Police in Italy had pledged to guarantee the safety of travelling fans after an unprovoked attack by Roma hooligans before the first leg at Anfield.
Reds fan Sean Cox remains in a critical condition from the assault.
