Stanley Park fisherman slashed in machete attack

A man was slashed across the chest in a machete attack in Stanley Park.

Emergency services were called to Stanley Park at around 10.10pm on Tuesday following a report of a serious assault to a 20-year-old.

The victim had been fishing with two other men at the lake when they were approached by two males wearing face coverings and wielding a machete and axe.

The 20-year-old man has been taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Both two offenders are described as being in their early 20’s; one male is 5’ 10” of stocky build and one white male is 6ft tall and of skinny build.

They were wearing dark clothing and face coverings and spoke with Liverpool accents.

Detective Inspector Paul Speight said: “We believe this attack was targeted and would like to let the public know that incidents like this are rare.

“This was a particularly nasty attack and we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in parks which should be enjoyed by the local community.

“We are doing everything we can to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

“We are putting extra patrols in the area to reassure the public and we would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time or saw two males acting suspiciously to get in touch.”
