Alfie Evans’ family dealt fresh court blow

The parents of Alfie Evans have lost their latest legal battle.

Tom Evans and Kate James asked the Court of Appeal on Monday to allow the terminally ill 23-month-old to be transferred to an alternative hospital in Italy.

But judges again ruled in favour of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, where Alfie is receiving treatment for an undiagnosed degenerative brain disease.

Mr Evans and Ms James have previously taken the Bootle toddler’s case to the High Court, Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights.

Their attempt to take the case back to the Supreme Court was rejected by three Court of Appeal judges.

“We want (them) to know they can’t break us, we’re never going to back down,” said Mr Evans.

“Alfie, the family and all of our supporters are stronger than ever.

“We’re never going to give up on you, Alfie.”

An end-of-life care plan for Alfie has been drawn up by specialists at Alder Hey after a High Court granted doctors the right to withdraw his life support.

Protestors converging outside the West Derby hospital have been urged to be mindful of other patients amid concerns about their behaviour.
