Thousands turns out for Sir Ken Dodd’s send-off

Thousands lined Liverpool’s streets to say a final farewell to Sir Ken Dodd.

The veteran entertainer and comedian, who died earlier this month, took a six-mile route to the city’s Anglican Cathedral from his home in Knotty Ash.

Sir Ken’s coffin was accompanied by a floral tribute based on his Diddymen while children dressed as the same character followed his body into the cathedral.

A host of stars from the entertainment world, including home-grown stars Ricky Tomlinson, Stan Boardman and Tom O’Connor joined mourners at the cathedral.

Hundreds of people observed the service on a big screen outside as Jimmy Tarbuck paid a glowing tribute to his felow Scouser before a packed congregation.

He said: “I’m pleased for Ken that there’s yet another full house.

“Was he a good comic? No – he was better than that. He was the greatest stage comedian I’ve ever seen in my life.

“Live on the stage, he set a standard which no-one has remotely approached since.”

A round of applause greeted Sir Ken’s coffin as it was carried out to the sound of his hit song ‘Happiness’, which became syonymous throughout his career.

Statues and Liverpool Town Hall were also adorned with the 90-year-old’s trademark tickling sticks as a mark of remembrance.
