Jamie Carragher suspended by Sky over spitting row

Sky Sports have suspended Jamie Carragher after he was filmed spitting at a car.

Carragher met with bosses of the broadcasting giant in London on Monday in the wake of the incident which took place on Saturday afternoon.

Video footage showed the Liverpool legend spitting in the direction of a man and his 14-year-old daughter after his former club’s defeat to Manchester United.

Carragher had been due to appear on Sky’s Monday Night Football but has been stood down from duties with the channel where he has been a pundit since 2013.

“Sky takes this matter extremely seriously and strongly condemns Jamie’s actions, we have made that clear to him in person today and suspended him from his duties,” read a Sky statement.

“It falls well below the standards we expect of our people.”

Bootle-born Carragher issued a public apology on Twitter and followed it up with a full apology to the affected family in an appearance on Sky News.

He said: “It was a moment of madness. Four or five seconds. I wish I could go back and change it, but I can’t do that. It’s the lowest of the low.

“Watching those clips back, it feels like an out of body thing for four or five seconds. Whatever the circumstances for anyone, you can’t behave like that. It is unacceptable.

“You are thinking to yourself; why did you react like that. You are a public figure and it is the only time I reacted like that.

“I can have no excuse and it devastating for the family involved and my own family. All I can do is apologise to the family.”

Asked about his future in the role, he added: “It is Sky’s decision, not my decision.

“What I would say is there is no doubt that why I have done is disgusting. I apologise for it, I’m getting vilified and rightly so.

“If someone did that in the game, I would have vilified them for a few days.”

Danish broadcaster TV3 have also dropped the 40-year-old from their coverage of United’s Champions League tie with Sevilla on Tuesday night.

Peter Norrelund, the channel’s head of sport, said: “Jamie should have been at Old Trafford for us tomorrow and we have taken him off that.

“It would have been like sending him into a lion’s den. I have seen the video and it certainly doesn’t look good.

“I don’t know what will happen [long-term]. It is not good behaviour but we are all just human beings. We want to hear from him what happened.

“That is the same for all employees – whether it is the receptionist or Jamie Carragher – we are not going to sanction someone until we’ve heard from them what happened.”
