Walton prison healthcare provider ends contract

The healthcare provider at Walton Prison have pulled out of their contract at the prison.

Lancashire Care are due to end their contract this month and cited the reason as the offer from NHS England of £6.7million, per year, as being “unsustainable.”

Solicitor Leanne Devine of city lawyers Broudie, Jackson and Canter who represent the familes of many who have died at the prison said “The withdrawal of Lancashire Care providing healthcare at HMP Liverpool is deeply concerning, particularly at a time when significant criticisms have been made along with the poor and inadequate healthcare provided at the prison.

“With conditions described as ‘worst ever seen’ by inspectors,” along with the lack of the most basic healthcare, and particularly mental health care, the continued number of deaths, and in particular self-inflicted deaths, is extremely worrying.

“The families we assist have expressed their frustration that there is no evidence of improvement.

“Having lost their loved ones they can only hope for change to avoid this happening to other families.”

With this news, families have advised us that they are concerned that the situation will only decline further.

“There is a clear need for immediate action to be taken to ensure that HMP Liverpool has sufficient funding to provide adequate and proper healthcare for some of the most vulnerable people in society.”

A report slammed the living conditions at Walton prison labelling them squalid.

The report also said ” The inspection team was highly experienced and could not recall having seen worse living conditions than those at HMP Liverpool.”
