Controversial plans to build new homes on Sefton Park Meadows have been scrapped.
Council leader Joe Anderson has conceded that the land will no longer be available for development, so long as an alternative solution is brought forward.
This marks the end of a long fought battle between the council and local residents who disagreed as to whether the land should have been used to build new homes.
The Mayor of Liverpool responded to a call of BBC radio regarding a shock announcement that the land would no longer be used for homes to confirm the news.
Anderson was clear in stating that the land can not simply go unused and instead suggested the land be used for allotments or a community garden.
Speaking after the announcement, Mayor Anderson stated that the reason that the land was no longer needed was due to the acquisition of the festival garden site – something which was not in place at the time the plans were put in place for Sefton Park Meadows.
