The driver of a car which crashed leaving its passenger dead is still in hospital.
The passenger of a car being chased by police was killed at around 4.35am on Christmas morning on Prescot Road in Old Swan.
The identity of the man who died has not been disclosed however his next of kin have been informed.
The driver of the car was immediately detained at the scene however he remains in hospital and has not been taken to a police station to be questioned.
Prescot Road was cordoned off yesterday after a car that was being chased smashed in to a bus stop.
Merseyside Police have confirmed that they have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
A spokesperson for the IPCC said: “We were notified of a fatal road traffic incident in Liverpool this morning by Merseyside Police.
“We have begun an independent investigation as initial information suggests the collision was preceded by a short police pursuit.”
