Mayor Joe Anderson accused of “sexist remark”

Liverpool’s Mayor, Joe Anderson, has been reported for making an allegedly “sexist” remark to an opposition councillor.

During an exchange at the council chambers last night Mayor Anderson appeared to call Lib Dem Member, Mirna Jaurez, a fishwife.

The comment was made after he brought up comments he said Cllr Juarez made at a previous meeting, in which he claimed she told the people of Liverpool to”get over” the government cuts. This is something she denies.

Shortly after the comment was made, Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Richard Kemp announced that his party would be making a formal complaint to the council’s standards body about Mayor Anderson’s conduct.

In a statement, Cllr Richard Kemp said “We will be reporting the Mayor of Liverpool to the standards committee of the council for using inappropriate, sexist language.

“Without a doubt he called my colleague Cllr Juarez a fishwife, that just isn’t on – its not good manners, its not good politics and language like that has to be stamped out.”

He added: “You don’t call a man a fishwife, she is the only woman in our ranks – he must have been referring to her and we don’t think that is acceptable.”

Anderson has hit back saying that he believes comments made by Cllr Juarez are far worse than his remark.
