Pair charged after weapons found in city centre cars

Two men have been charged after police found weapons in cars in Liverpool city centre.

Mobile patrol officers made the discovery in two separate incidents on Wednesday evening, with the first taking place at around 8.25pm.

A silver Ford private hire taxi was stopped due to the manner of driving. Following checks by officers, a knife was found in the car.

James Aston, 26, from Vauxhall was arrested and charged with possession of a knife in a public place and bailed to appear at South Sefton Magistrates Court on November 24.

In a separate incident at around 9pm that same night, an officer on mobile patrol in Copperas Hill sighted a Vauxhall Vectra driving erratically.

The car was stopped on Lime Street and the search of a passenger resulted in the seizure of a lock knife.

Adam Pagan, 21, from Lydiate was arrested and charged with possession of a knife in a public place.

He was bailed to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on November 30.

Local Policing Superintendent Mark Wiggins said: “We will continue to be proactive in our patrols around Liverpool City Centre and across Merseyside to ensure that we reduce offences, and educate people on the serious consequences of carrying any weapon.

“I would like to issue a strong message that carrying a bladed weapon is a criminal offence, and carries significant consequences.

“The reason for this is that knives kill and people carrying knives is a threat to our communities.

“I can assure you that we will act on all information reported to us, and if you know anyone who is carrying such weapons then do the right thing, and let us know.”

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or the Crimestoppers line anonymously on 0800 555 111.
