Wirral Council are set to go head-to-head with the Government over thre threat of reducing bin collections to once every three weeks.
Six councils across the country have already made the shift to one-week-in-three pick-ups, including Wigan, Salford, Rochdale, Oldham and Bury.
The council has faced pressure from Central Government to reach its target of recycling 50% of all waste by 2020 however the local Council has hit out at the same ministers for reducing funding to the local authority.
Cllr Brightmore said: “I can confirm we will not be introducing three weekly collections of general waste. Wirral will continue with fortnightly collections.
“The council has been forced to make cuts of almost £200m since 2010 – and even more cuts are expected to be imposed by the Conservative Government.”
It had been suggested that reducing bin collections to every three weeks may help cover the shortfall and the council then launched a consultation with local residents in relation to the plans.
Wirral residents already are subject to an option additional charge if they wish to have their garden waste removed.
Cllr Brightmore said “The extensive consultation is absolutely clear, our borough wants to recycle. It’s a priority and the right thing to do. We must recycle more.”
“I’m committed to this. However, the way we recycle needs to be effective, affordable and acceptable to Wirral’s residents.”
