The RMT have held ‘productive’ talks with Steve Rotheram over Merseyrail’s guard dispute.
Representatives from the transport union met with the Liverpool City Region’s newly-elected Metro Mayor in attempts to resolve the ongoing stand-off.
Train staff completed the final of three days of strikes last weekend as visitors heading to Birkdale for the final day of The Open encountering disruptions.
It followed two walk outs in the space of 72 hours on July 8 and 10 while race goers at April’s Grand National showpiece also faced travel problems.
Industrial action began in March and centred on Merseyrail’s plans to introduce driver-only operated trains from 2020, cutting the roles of 220 rail guards.
Transport chiefs attempted to block a planned 24-hour walkout with a High Court appeal which was overturned by judges.
But RMT general secretary Mick Cash confirmed on Monday that discussions with Mayor Rotheram had progressed well ahead of a follow-up in early September.
He said: “We have had a productive meeting today and there was a full and frank exchange of views and information.
“Both sides agreed to continue the dialogue and we will reconvene within the next 6 weeks.”
