Traffic was disrupted on Edge Lane after a large sinkhole formed in the road.
Measuring three metres deep and six metres wide, the sinkhole formed early on Thursday morning causing disruption to drivers on the morning commute.
The affected area of road was closed off as Liverpool City Council’s highway team attempted to investigate the cause of the sinkhole and begin repairs on it.
Motorists were unable to drive around it due to the span across both lanes of the busy route near the junction of Beech Road in the Wavertree area.
United Utilities confirmed that they were working with multiple agencies to resolve the issue while asking drivers to avoid the route for the foreseeable.
Drivers will be able to use the inbound route from Friday morning but the outbound carriageway will remain closed due to repair work on the sinkhole.
