Legendary Liverpool solicitor Rex Makin dies

Tributes have poured in following the death of Liverpool solicitor Rex Makin.

One of the city’s most charismatic personalities, the veteran lawyer and philanthropist passed away at the age of 91, it was revealed on Tuesday.

Considered one of Liverpool’s best legal representatives, Makin’s lengthy career saw him involved in some of the most prominent moment in the region’s history.

He was involved in cases surrounding the Hillsborough and Heysel disaster while he also acted as a representative for Beatles manager Brian Epstein’s family.

Makin had a hand in the Fab Four’s early career and was credited for originally coining the since widely-used phrase of ‘Beatlemania’.

He also helped successfully overturn the convictions of George Kelly, who was executed for the Cameo cinema murders in 1950.

Flags across Liverpool were flown at half-mast in memory of Makin, who was became the first solicitor to be made a Freeman of the city in 2003.
