Eric’s Club honoured with Blue Plaque

Iconic Liverpool club Eric’s has been awarded a Blue Plaque.

The former Mathew Street venue was at the forefront of the punk movement in the late 1970s and hosted a number of emerging and later legendary names.

Ramones, Joy Division, The Police, Sex Pistols, The Clash and Talking Heads all visited the city as performers in Eric’s, which was closed in March 1980.

Pete Wylie, who performed at the final night as frontman of the band Wah!, unveiled the plaque on Thursday as part of BBC Music Day’s celebrations.

Radio Merseyside were responsible for Eric being one of 48 locations in the broadcaster’s Local network that commemorated influential music locations.

Sue Owen, Radio Merseyside’s managing editor, said: “Eric’s in the late 70s was the place to go in Liverpool for punk and music sub-culture.

“It was exciting, it was different, it scared the establishment. The club gave new local bands a place to perform and make a name for themselves.

“I’m so pleased we’re able to recognise Eric’s place in Liverpool’s musical history with a blue plaque.”
