Labour dominate Merseyside in 2017 General Election

Labour have won all bar one of Merseyside’s seats at the 2017 General Election.

Jeremy Corbyn’s party surpassed expectations in results across the country as the ruling Conservative government failed to secure an overall majority.

With the UK heading for a hung Parliament, Labour was able to retain a stronghold and made marginal gains in its traditional heartland of Merseyside.

In Walton, Dan Carden has been elected an MP for the first time after being nominated to stand for Labour in Thursday’s elections for the area’s ward.

Carden won his party’s backing ahead of Joe Anderson and Euro MP Theresa Griffin following Steve Rotheram’s election as Liverpool City Region metro mayor.

Garston and Halewood remained a Labour hold as Maria Eagle was re-elected while Louise Ellman retained her place in Liverpool Riverside with 40,599 vote.

Stephen Twigg earned a third term as West Derby’s representative, as did Luciana Berger in Wavertree, where she saw off local Liberal Democrats leader Richard Kemp.

Sefton Central remained under Labour rule as Bill Esterson while neighbouring Bootle was also held by the party through ex-Sefton Council leader Peter Dowd.

Derek Twigg was re-elected to Halton, a seat he had held since 1997, while George Howarth won Knowsley

In Wirral, Labour also enjoyed total dominance with Angela Eagle’s stronghold on Wallasey since the 1992 General Election continued as she was re-elected.

Another veteran Labour politician retained control in Birkenhead as Frank Field won a record 10th successive term in the town.

Shadow Health Minister Justin Madders won Ellesmere Port and Neston with almost double his majority from 2015 while Alison McGovern secured Wirral South.

Margaret Greenwood held onto the Wirral West seat, which had been won back from former Conservative minister Esther McVey at the 2015 election.

Elsewhere in the region, Labour’s 34-year dominance in St Helens continued with Conor McGinn while Marie Rimmer also held onto the area’s South ward.

Helen Jones will represent Warrington North for a further five years after earning the right to extend her Parliament spell to an unbroken 25-year term.

Control was also wrestled back from the Conservatives in Warrington South as Labour’s Faisal Rashid was successfully elected for the first time.

The Tories’ only seat on Merseyside came in Southport, where Damien Moore edged out Labour’s Liz Savage with a majority of just shy of 3,000 votes.

Nationally, the party endured a disastrous night as it lost an overall tally of 17 seats despite gaining 12 in Scotland from the SNP, who lost 21 in total.

Theresa May, who called the snap election in April, has already ruled out the prospect of resigning as Prime Minister.
