Bootle man arrested in illegal TV box raids

A Bootle man was arrested as part of a clampdown on illegal set-top TV boxes.

The 36-year-old was one of five people questioned in connection with raids on addresses in the North West and North Wales by anti-piracy detectives.

Police believe the group, also operating in Bolton, Cheadle, Manchester and Rhyl, have made an estimated £250,000 in selling the devices pre-loaded with Kodi.

Prosecution on the boxes, which allow users to illegally stream films and live football, was brought by the Premier League and its broadcast partners.

Sky, BT Sport and Virgin Media were also represented as part of the raids, carried out by police with the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT).

Kieron Sharp, Director General of FACT, said: “This day of action should send out a clear warning to anyone involved in the sale and distribution of illegal set-top boxes that law enforcement and industry take this matter very seriously.

“Set-top boxes loaded with apps and add-ons allowing access to copyright infringing material are very much illegal and anyone involved in selling these boxes should not be surprised to receive a knock on the door.”
