Liverpool’s Road to the Quadruple

Following Jurgen Klopp’s shock announcement that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, speculations have begun formulating over just how successful a year this could be for the Reds. Is a quadruple really on the cards?

Eyes on a 20th First Division Title

Those looking to place football bets will find the odds at 40/1 for Liverpool to lift four trophies this season. It is not beyond the realms of possibility. They are fighting at the top of the league, are into the Europa League knockouts and EFL Cup Final, and after being tipped by Paddy Power news to progress from the FA Cup fourth round, they did so convincingly.

Klopp’s main focus will be securing the second Premier League title in Liverpool’s history. This would be their 20th First Division triumph seeing them draw level with historic rivals Manchester United. What a goodbye present that would be as Klopp prepares to depart Merseyside.

While the pre-season media narrative largely expected another title race between Pep Guardiola’s relentless Manchester City and Mikel Arteta’s youthful Arsenal, it is Liverpool that have been the surprise package. After finishing fifth last campaign, four points off the Champions League spots, the Reds have risen from the ashes, firmly cementing themselves among the frontrunners for the trophy.

However, there are some huge fixtures on the horizon that could derail Liverpool’s season. All eyes will be on Anfield come 9th March as the Reds host City in what could be a title decider for the ages.

Domestic Duo

Liverpool have already booked their spot at Wembley for the EFL Cup after beating Fulham 3-2 over two legs. There they will meet Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea, who hammered Middlesbrough 6-1 to avoid the embarrassment of bailing out to Championship opposition.

The Reds and Blues have met in domestic cup finals twice since the beginning of 2022, once in the EFL Cup and once in the FA Cup. Both ended 0-0 and both Liverpool went on to win on penalties. Liverpool seem to have Chelsea’s number when cup glory is on the line, and given the discrepancies between their performances this year, Klopp’s side will travel south as heavy favourites.
The FA Cup is one of the most unpredictable competitions in world football. It has had five different winners in the previous six seasons, with Liverpool’s win in 2022 their eighth FA Cup success.
We are down to the last 16, where the competition tends to heat up. With United knowing it is their only realistic chance of silverware and City looking to add to their trophy cabinet, both Manchester clubs will be taking it seriously. Despite the plethora of quality teams that remain, Liverpool have been the best team in the country this season and will fancy their chances of going all the way.
Success on the Continent
Klopp will also want to leave Liverpool with another European trophy after emerging victorious from an all-English Champions League affair in 2019. While the Europa League might not be the pinnacle of club football, it is still a major trophy and will add to Klopp’s era.
When you scour the teams left in the competition, you can’t help but feel Liverpool are the strongest left by a significant distance. If they reach the final, it will be Klopp’s last game as Liverpool manager, and there is absolutely no doubt his players will leave it all on the pitch to win him one last trophy.
