£23m extension work begins at New Mersey

Work on six new restaurants and an 11-screen cinema as part of extending the New Mersey retail park has begun.

The official ground-breaking ceremony at the Speke complex was attended by several prominent figures within Liverpool City Council’s cabinet this week.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ann O’Byrne and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Malcolm Kennedy, were on hand to see work begin on the £23 million development.

Cineworld, Nando’s and Wagamama are already among the big names confirmed for the redevelopment, which is set to be completed in full by summer 2018.

Further restaurants are set to be announced in the scheme, which is expected to generate 250-300 full and part-time jobs in addition to 100 construction jobs.

Cllr O’Byrne said: “The investment and expansion at New Mersey is fantastic news for people living in and around Speke.

“It is vital we have strong retail and leisure facilities right across the city, and this development will create much-needed new jobs and give local people a greater choice of quality places to spend their leisure time.”
