West Brom 1-2 Everton FC: Four things we learned

Everton secured their first competitive win under new boss Ronald Koeman, as they came from behind to beat West Brom at the Hawthorns yesterday.

The Blues opened their Premier League campaign with a draw at home to Tottenham last weekend, and they fell behind to Tony Pulis’ side through Jonas Olsson’s first half header.

But Kevin Mirallas equalised over the stroke of half time following a flowing team move, and veteran midfielder Gareth Barry headed in from close range after the break to secure all three points.

Here are four things we learned from a positive afternoon for at the Hawthorns…

Lukaku underlines his importance

Romelu Lukaku was left on the bench by manager Koeman for this tie, deemed as not 100% fit, having been ruled out of the Tottenham game through injury.

However the Dutchman’s decision to bring him on after just 38 minutes shows just how vital he is to Everton’s attack. Prior to his entrance the Blues had looked toothless going forward, with Gerard Deulofeu unable to make an impact as a lone striker.

Lukaku changed that, he occupied defenders and gave Everton an attacking focal point in the second half, allowing Deulofeu and Mirallas to threaten from out wide.

The announcement post-game that Lukaku will be staying at Goodison Park brings a welcome end to speculation of a return to Chelsea, and ensures that the Toffees continue the season with a recognised goalscorer.

Stekelenburg is stayer for Everton

Summer signing Maarten Stekelenburg followed up an impressive debut against Tottenham, with an assured display against the Baggies.

There was speculation during pre-season, as to who would start the season as No.1 between the Dutch goalkeeper and Joel Robles.

However it looks as if Stekelenburg has edged out the Spaniard, following a strong start to life at Goodison Park. Two vital stops in the second half ensured that Everton remained in front and his experience could prove invaluable.

Evergreen Barry remains a key man

Former England international Barry continues to operate as a crucial presence in the Blues midfield, and his winning goal now means he has scored in nineteen consecutive Premier League seasons.

Barry, 35, does not possess the ability to go box-to-box anymore, but his ability to retain possession and maintain a structure within Everton’s midfield makes him essential to those around him.

Mirallas, Deulofeu, Lukaku and Ross Barkley all benefit greatly from the experience of the former Manchester City man, and Koeman will be keen to prolong his longevity.

Holgate ready for first-team chance

Young defender Mason Holgate looks set for a sustained run in the Blues starting XI, following impressive performances against both Tottenham and West Brom.

Holgate, 19, made his Everton debut against Tottenham, standing in for the injured Seamus Coleman at right back. However the ex-Barnsley man’s performances mean that will stay in the team at least until the Irishman returns.

Naturally a centre back, Holgate has adapted well to playing at full back, using his pace to shackle Erik Lamela and James McClean in successive weeks.
