Police have been unable to identify the body of a woman found in Stanley Park.
Officers were alerted to the walled garden area of the park last Friday (August 28) by a member of the public and had initially treated the death as unexplained.
However the case was upgraded to a murder investigation after early indications that the body found in a black bin bag may have been in the park for several weeks.
Detectives believe the woman was around 70 years old, of slight built at around 5’2″ in height and had strawberry blonde hair. She was also wearing a pink Nike T-shirt.
But despite extensive enquiries and a public appeal for information, they have yet to match her DNA profile or compare dental records to any found on databases.
Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald said: “Today marks one week since a murder investigation was launched after the discovery of a woman’s body in Stanley Park.
“Firstly I would like to thank everyone who has come forward with information. Every call, message and piece of information, no matter how small it may seem, could prove vital in helping us find the person responsible for this woman’s death.
“So far, we have received over 120 reports from members of the public, including 40 suggested names, and we are incredibly grateful for the support shown to the investigation.
“We are determined to find out who the woman is, uncover what happened to her, and ensure those responsible are held accountable. We will continue to keep the public updated with any significant developments as the investigation progresses.”
