Man charged with sending death threats to Luciana Berger

A man has been charged in connection with death threats sent to Liverpool MP Luciana Berger.

John Nimmo appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates Court on Wednesday with a number of emails received by the Wavertree representative last Friday.

Ms Berger was allegedly warned that she was ‘going to get it like Jo Cox did’, referring to the Labour MP killed outside her Yorkshire constituency in June.

Nimmo has been charged with sending a message causing anxiety or distress to Berger, who is among those in the running to become Liverpool’s Metro Mayor.

Th 28-year-old from South Shields pleaded guilty to the charges.

The latest round of threatening messages sent to the 35-year-old come a fortnight after she stood down from her role in Labour’s shadow cabinet as part of a mass show of no-confidence from the party’s politicians in current leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Berger is also the second Merseyside MP to be targeted following an attack on the Wallasey constituency offices of Angela Eagle, who is challenging Mr Corbyn for the party’s leadership.
