Missing teenager’s body found in River Mersey

A body found in the River Mersey has been confirmed as missing teenager Daniel Halliday.

The 14-year-old disappeared on June 30 after getting into difficulty while jumping waves in the water at Crosby Beach alongside his brothers.

An extensive search operation was conducted with coastguard helicopter and lifeboats from the RNLI joining emergency services in trying to locate him.

But after efforts were stood down on July 1, Daniel’s family issued a public statement describing their ‘worst fear’ that he had perished in the water.

Police received a report that the body of a boy had been found in the river by coastguards on Monday at New Brighton, which has now been confirmed as Daniel.

“Following extensive forensic examinations by Merseyside Police, the boy has been formally identified as Daniel Halliday,” confirmed a force spokesperson.

“Daniel had been reported to have been jumping waves in Crosby at 7pm on Sunday 30 June before getting into difficulty.

“Officers are supporting his family at this difficult time.

“His death is being treated as not suspicious and the case was referred to the coroner’s office.”
