Late pay offer averts Liverpool bus strike

This week’s planned Liverpool bus strike has been called off.

Nearly 500 Stagecoach drivers were set to walk out from June 13 to 17 in a dispute over pay that threatened have a significant impact on public transport.

It would see disruption to Taylor Swift’s Anfield concerts as well as causing issues several of the city’s busiest routes including the 82, 86, 10A and 53.

The drivers cited a ‘huge disparity’ between their wages and those of their city counterparts working for rival bus company Arriva in the reasons for striking.

But the Unite union announced on Monday that ‘constructive’ talks had taken place with Stagecoach officials that resulted in an improved offer for drivers.

As a result of that breakthrough, the strike has been called off as a goodwill gesture while members are balloted on the new proposal later this month.

If the offer is not accepted, the strikes will be rescheduled for June 24 and 25.

Unite regional officer Brian Troake said: “The threat of industrial action has made Stagecoach see sense and come back to the table with a new and improved offer for our members that recognises their hard work and current low pay.

“We have decided, as a goodwill gesture, to cancel the planned strikes later this month to allow the ballot to take place.”
