Bulger mum ‘in shock’ at killer’s latest parole bid

James Bulger’s mother is ‘in a state of shock’ at one of his killers’ latest bid for freedom.

Jon Venables and Robert Thompson were released on licence after serving eight years for the brutal murder of the toddler after abducting him in 1993.

The former schoolfriends were given new identifies but Venables was jailed in 2010 and 2017 after being found in possession of child sexual abuse images.

A two-day parole hearing is set to take place from November 14 when the now 41-year-old will appeal make his latest appeal to be released.

His previous application in 2020 to be freed was rejected following an assessment of the case, for which he was sentenced to 40 months.

James’s mother Denise Fergus has consistently argued for Venables to remain behind bars due to the risk he poses to society after persistent reoffending.

Issuing a statement on her behalf, the James Bulger Memorial Trust said: “Denise remains deeply concerned about the potential release of Jon Venables, whom she considers to be one of the biggest dangers to our country.

“She firmly believes that if he is released he will undoubtedly offend again. The thought of him being allowed back into our communities is undeniably alarming.”
