Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that the country’s longest reigning monarch passed away peacefully at her Balmoral estate on Thursday afternoon.
Her death came just hours after the Palace announced that royal doctors were ‘concerned’ for her health and placed her under medical supervision.
Prince Charles, who will succeed his mother as the new figurehead, was among immediate family members who travelled to be at her bedside.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” confirmed a Palace statement.
“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
A 10-day period of national mourning will begin on Friday, which will culminate in the Queen’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey later this month.
Flags across Liverpool are being flown at half-mast and a book of condolences will be opened from 1pm on Friday at the city’s Town Hall for people to sign.
