Review: Saturday Jazz at Ma Boyle’s

Set in the iconic Tower Building, this establishment will have seen its fair share of performers take to its boards during the past 151 years.

Formerly an oyster bar, this perfectly-located venue is nestled close to the Courtyard of St Nicholas’ Church with a warm and welcoming glow that can be seen from Water Street thanks to its lovely outdoor dining, which is romantically lit as the nights draw in.

Every Saturday night, this popular watering hole plays host to an intimate jazz evening. We were lucky enough to catch Rob Stringer who has been working the jazz scene since 2004. Accompanied by a fantastic Celloist,  they sounded so good when they kicked off that I was convinced it was recorded music playing!

The crowd quickly warmed to the duo and the intimate space allows for an excellent atmosphere to be built between performer and audience.

Every table was full with tables talking and singing amongst themselves. Ma Boyle’s has always had something for everyone but this Jazz evening had everything from Birthday Celebrations to Girls Nights Out. A diverse crowd always seems to evidence a truly excellent evening that can be enjoyed by all.

As always with Ma Boyle’s, the reception from staff was excellent, they really cannot do enough. On Saturday Jazz Night, the kitchen stays open until 10pm so you can enjoy the usual high standard of cuisine with a side of Jazz.

Ma’s has an extensive range of drinks at reasonable prices. They carry over 12 different gins, 21 rums and have 20 different cocktails to chose from. I would definitely recommend a Pornstar Ma’Tini, the preference of pineapple over passion fruit gives it a refreshing twist on a classic.

If you are looking for a reasonably price evening of entertainment and indulgence then you need to book a table at Ma Boyle’s. If you are quick you can catch Modjango on Saturday, September 18 with Frank Griffith bringing New York vibes on September 25.
