Leon Gortezka has explained why he snubbed a transfer to Liverpool.
Goretzka joined Bayern Munich in summer 2018 after running down his contract at Schalke but was tipped to link up with Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
The Germany international opted to stay in the Bundesliga with the Bavarians over a move to the Reds prior to their sixth Champions League triumph.
Klopp’s interest in Goretzka came after observing him at close quarters during his seven years in charge of Schalke’s local rivals Borussia Dortmund.
He enjoyed a starring role as Bayern were crowned European champions last season and has now revealed the reasons for passing up on his compatriot.
“They were a consideration, of course,” Goretzka told The Athletic.
“They’re a great club, and their development since Klopp came has been amazing. We’re all a little proud of him winning the title.
“But I took a long time making my decision, and I was 100 per cent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.”
Goretza’s move to Bayern came after Liverpool had reinforced their midfield options with the capture of RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita and Fabinho from Monaco.
