Everton set new league record in Burnley rout

Everton’s 5-1 win over Burnley saw a new English football record set.

Yerry Mina opened the scoring in the Boxing Day rout at Turf Moor and in the process recorded the 7,000th league goal in the Blues’ entire history.

No other English top-flight side has reached the figure, which was further increased with two goals from Lucas Digne, a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty and Richarlison’s late strike.

Speaking after the rout over the Clarets, Marco Silva hailed the character of his players in responding to a 6-2 hammering by Tottenham just days earlier.

He said: “We learn every time, not just when we have a bad result.

“We had a really tough result in the last game and even today we won the match clear but we learned as well, for sure. It’s part of our process as a team.

“My first words are for our fans and for our players The fans welcomed our players before the match [which was] fantastic after a really tough result.

“And our players deserved this win and the three points. It was a good win for us. We got three important points for us and now is the time to rest and prepare for the [next match].

“I think the best solution for us to the last result was you want to play as quickly as you can. Luckily for us we played after three days, so quickly, and [we produced the response].

“We should [have won] and we did. We showed our quality and I don’t have doubts, our players don’t have doubts about our quality or our attitude as a team.

“Our last game wasn’t a normal one from us but we are here to fight, to compete and to show the ambition we have as a club.”
