Trent Alexander-Arnold has been named in England’s World Cup squad.
The Liverpool defender found himself called up to the national side as Gareth Southgate announced his 23-man squad for the finals on Wednesday.
Alexander-Arnold is yet to receive a senior cap for the Three Lions but earned a place in the side for Russia after enjoying a breakthrough season at Anfield.
He scored the opening goal of the Reds’ eventual route to the Champions League final and earned widespread plaudits for his ensuing performances.
Southgate previously recognised Alexander-Arnold’s efforts by inviting him to train with the senior squad at their St George’s Park base in March.
He said: “It was an unbelievable moment to find out I was going to go to the World Cup, especially at a young age.
“It’s probably capped off a really good season for me.
“I found out this morning, just before we came out to Marbella. The manager came and spoke to me just as we were getting on the plane.
“He asked me if I knew anything about the squad or anything yet. I said, ‘No’ and he said, ‘Have you got anything planned around the time of the World Cup?’
“I was like, ‘No, no holidays or anything…’
“He said to me, ‘OK, good… You’re in the squad!’ It was a really proud moment. On England’s behalf, it was nice of them to let the manager tell me.”
Jurgen Klopp previously backed the teenager, 19, for a call-up due to his versatility in both a defensive and midfield role.
Alexander-Arnold is one of three Liverpool players involved in England’s World Cup squad, with captain Jordan Henderson also on the 23-man shortlist.
Midfielder Adam Lallana has been placed on Southgate’s stand-by list after making his return to competitive action in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Brighton.
