Liverpool condemn Flanagan over assault conviction

Jon Flanagan has been condemned by Liverpool after his assault conviction.

Flanagan was handed a 12-month community order with over 40 hours of unpaid work on Wednesday for the incident involving his partner last month.

CCTV footage showed the 25-year-old pushing Rachel Wall into a wall and attempting to kick her during the incident in Liverpool city centre.

Liverpool Magistrates’ Court chose to spare Flanagan a six-month custodial sentence often handed out in cases for common assault charges.

But the local-born defender and product of the Reds’ academy now faces a fight for his following a strongly-worded statement from Anfield officials.

A club investigation into Flanagan’s actions in Duke Street during a night out on December 22 has launched and could see him face disciplinary action.

“We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the player’s actions during the events that took place resulting in this criminal conviction,” said a Liverpool spokesman.

“It leaves his own reputation damaged and, through association, he has severely let down the club he had previously represented with distinction.

“We have expressed to him our disappointment and anger that he has failed to live up to the values of Liverpool Football Club, in this specific instance.

“The club has allowed the legal formalities to reach a conclusion before deciding on or implementing any internal disciplinary action.

“That internal process will now begin.”

Flanagan has made only one senior appearance for Liverpool this season in their Carabao Cup exit to Leicester City back in September.

He signed a new three-year deal with the club in March 2016, which came on the back of an 18-month spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
