Unsworth urges Everton fans to back Allardyce

David Unsworth has urged Everton fans to give Sam Allardyce time to transform the club’s fortunes.

Allardyce is due to be confirmed as the new Blues manager on Thursday and was in attendance at Goodison Park for their 4-0 hammering of West Ham.

But the England boss has been met with a lukewarm reception from fans who have argued that Everton should have targeted a higher calibre of candidate.

Watford’s Marco Silva was among the Toffees hierarchy’s preferred targets but their approaches were rebuffed, leading to Allardyce’s eventual arrival.

Unsworth, though, has urged the fans to give the 63-year-old their full backing as he looks to improve on a disappointing season so far.

He said: “Sam has my full backing.

“Like any manager he needs to be afforded time and patience and the backing from the whole football club.

“I’ve had a ten-minute chat with Sam Allardyce and I’ll speak to him in depth about the players sometime this week before continuing my role with the under-23s.

“Let’s be honest, we’ve under-performed all season. We certainly don’t want to be in the bottom three.

“We expect to be in the top half and pushing on, competing to win trophies and to get into Europe. We need to stick together.

“We need to give Sam the time to get us up the league and there’s a platform for that now.”
